'Best of Open Mic' Showcase Sunday at Spring Lake's Seven Steps Up aims to lift spirits, celebrate 'positive' vibe

Feb. 2017  -  #supportgrandrapids Magazine - Review by Dale Wicks
Rachel White's jangly acoustic sound on "Destination Sunday" is a very Michigan sort of recording.  Her innocent voice, with its pleasing Midwestern twang and upbeat lyrics sound like springtime slowly peeking through a fading Michigan winter.  The tracks were cut at Planet Sunday Studios with Papa Vegas' Joel Ferguson, who fills in most of additional instrumentation.

Most tracks feature sparse percussion, but a few have a full drum kit, like the driving "Superman" or country-ish "Good Kind of Criminal."  The swingy set-closer "By The Sea" kind of throws off the Michigan theme with its maritime lyrical setting and steel drums, but it's a pleasing diversion, adding a new dimension that stands up well with a CD that already stands up well on its own.

"Straightforward, relatable, and always looking at the bright side seems like an accurate tagline for Destination Sunday.... Rachel’s gift for storytelling and honest self-awareness give her a maturity beyond her years in the songs she writes, all while remaining the cool girl-next-door who plays guitar."
